Maghan Hunt, 23, began working at the Valley Post Monday in the capacity of sports reporter and education reporter. Hunt, a Redding native, graduated from CSU Chico in 2006 with a B.A. in Communication Design Media Arts, she said.
"I'm looking forward to getting back into writing and meeting people," Hunt said.
Hunt was sports editor for the Shasta College newspaper, the Lance, in 2003. In the summer of 2007, she worked for NASCAR as a communications liaison to secure entertainment and musical acts at NASCAR events. Part of her work led her to reading Hollywood movie scripts to make sure any use of NASCAR images were in line with company policy. She read "Burn After Reading" even though the only NASCAR imagery was on televisions in the background of a scene, she said.
She also worked as an intern at KRCR News Channel 7, where she helped edit stories and went on assignments with reporters.
Hunt said she looked forward to reporting at the Valley Post.
"I feel there is great opportunity at a small paper. I can learn a lot," she said. "I love meeting high school students, learning things I didn't know before, and telling people about those things in a way that interests them."
Hunt's appreciation for high school sports was founded in her years before graduating at Foothill High School.
"Foothill had a really good football program. It really united the school and bonded all of the classes together," she said. "It was a really fun time."
In her spare time, Hunt said she enjoys walking her Chin-eranian dog, a mix of Japanese Chin and Pomeranian, and she also enjoys watching softball.
