West Valley High School's varsity football team wrapped up its first week of practice last week and, according to Head Coach Greg Grandell, it was a good week.
"Strength Coach (Rich) Harris has been working with the guys and it seems to be going well," said Grandell. "We have some dings and bangs, but nothing to really worry about."
Grandell spoke about the young defensive front, but feels confident with the players he has placed in that role. The offensive front is also young, and both have good potential, but it all depends on the progression of each player in his assigned spot, he said.
With WVHS varsity scrimmage coming up, Grandell is looking for improvement in his players and hopes to see the team moving ahead in all of the needed areas.
"We attended a football camp at Nevada Union and I'm looking forward to seeing how that helps us on the field," Grandell said.
The varsity squad has a few returning players including Zach Miller, David Fife, Gab Groff, Brandon Ralph and Tyler Stevenson. Levi Cox, playing quarterback, gives the team a seasoned receiving core.
Two players to keep an eye on this season, according to Grandell, are Red Bluff High School transfer student Ron Hampton, playing at corner, and Josh Wilfong at the tackle position.
