Honored Anderson day care center provides for breastfeeding mothers

Cozy Kids Daycare in Anderson was one of 10 local childcare providers honored recently by the Breastfeeding Support Center in Redding as a facility that goes above and beyond in supporting mothers who breastfeed their infants.

The awards were presented in honor of World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7.

"Returning to work after a child is born is stressful," said Susan Ann Spencer, an internationally certified Lactation Consultant.

"In order for breastfeeding mothers to provide breast milk for their infants while away at work, they must have the support of their families and their childcare providers," Spencer noted.

More than 60 local family-based and center-based childcare providers were surveyed regarding their policies and procedures for breastfeeding mothers.

The majority of childcare providers do accommodate mothers who want to feed their infants expressed breast milk.

Many providers also encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies during breaks from work. Some even offer a private space for pumping or nursing, Spencer said.

All breastfeeding-friendly childcare providers will be given certificates recognizing their commitment to the health of babies through their support of breastfeeding mothers.
