City of Anderson officials and Les Baugh, Shasta County Supervisor of District 5, traipsed among cantaloupes, corn rows and tomato vines Thursday, Aug. 13, while surveying the success of Anderson-Cottonwood Christian Assistance's community garden.

The community garden generates nearly 100 pounds of produce per week for the ACCA food bank, spokesman Lyle Amlin said. Additionally, publicity encouraged local growers to double their food donations to the non-profit organization for distribution to the needy, he said.

Tours of the garden as well as the Anderson Farmers Market were led by representatives of Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC), the agency that provides technical support to both ACCA and the Farmers Market.

"I think it's a great thing," said Dana Shigley, Anderson's acting City Manager. "It provides an avenue for ACCA to provide fresh and healthy food to those that really need it and have the most difficulty in accessing fresh food."

Plans for similar gardens are under consideration by Verde Vale Elementary School officials as well as the Cottonwood Park Board, according to Christine Haggard, HEAC's community organizer.

Garden organizers credited the garden's success to community donations such as fertilizer from the City of Anderson and fencing material from Anderson Rotary.

Anderson councilwoman Melissa Hunt also participated in the tour.
