A 1950s-style family festival planned for the Anderson River Park on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. will celebrate the zucchini. Several zucchini-centrist events, including the zucchini race and the bake off, cost a dollar to enter. Billed as the First Annual Zucchini Festival, the event is sponsored by Shasta County Citizens for a Healthy Environment (SCCHE).
Some events and competitions include prizes: Zucchini Races - Car body must be designed from a zucchini, and gravity powered only. Zuke-a-Pult - See who's Zuke hits the bulls-eye. Zucchini bake off - Bring your best bread, cookie, cake, etc. Best designed race car Best decorated zucchini Pie eating contest Music will be provided by several bands, including Bob Christensen, George Rogers, Boomer & Mystic Rock, Nick Ciampi and the ROCS. Craft and food vendors will also be present.
"We fashioned the awards to look like ribbons you might win at the fair," spokesperson for SCCHE Elaine Rutkowski said. "Hopefully seeing or winning these awards will inspire kids to want to enter contests at fairs to come. We're all about promoting and preserving agriculture."
