Acting City Manager Dana Shigley, 45, will soon have the word Acting removed from her title, Anderson Mayor Butch Schaefer announced following a closed session Tuesday to discuss the position title.
The actual vote to change Shigley’s title and set her salary will take place in open session at the council’s next regular meeting, set for Sept. 1, Schaefer said.
But that didn’t stop Anderson's first-term Councilman James Yarbrough from introducing Shigley at the Anderson Chamber of Commerce Greeters meeting on Wednesday as, “Your new City Manager, Dana Shigley.”
The somewhat premature introduction drew a round of applause from most of the 87 business representatives and city officials attending the hour-long gathering at Butte Community Bank in Anderson.
“I’m thrilled. I’m excited,” Shigley said Wednesday of the more permanent-sounding title. “It was not a surprise to me because we had been talking about it in previous closed sessions,” Shigley said of the council’s apparent decision to change the title, although she noted that it is technically still unofficial.
“I am pleased that the council has the confidence in me to do the tasks that lie ahead,” Shigley said.
Anderson’s City Council is expected to ratify the position title and set Shigley’s annual salary at $116,500 with a slight increase in her monthly car allowance, Shigley said.
Shigley was named Acting City Manager when then-City Manager Scott Morgan, 52, accepted a similar position in West Melbourne, Fla., and relinquished his job July 7.
Morgan had been Anderson’s City Manager for more than 11 years and was paid $121,000 when he resigned.
Shigley’s car allowance will likely increase by $50 per month due to the many more public events in Anderson that she will attend as City Manager. Shigley was named assistant city manager in October 2003. In May 2008, she also assumed the duties and responsibilities of City Finance Director and Treasurer.
