'Cash for Clunkers' not working for me

What is a clunker?

It's whatever vehicles (cars) President Obama decided they would be. He listed these as cars from 1984 to 1998 getting less than 18 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Of course, Obama is the all-knowing Messiah, so he must be right.

He declared that cars made before 1984 are not clunkers. So, at our house we, don't own any clunkers!

We own only senior cars, worthy of all the respect seniors are due because of work they have done, their honesty, experience and even wisdom, in some cases.

My 1976 El Camino is 33 years old and gets only 14-15 miles per gallon and uses hardly any oil. It has served faithfully for all those years. But, it's not on the list so it's not a clunker. I can't turn it in and get a government check for :$4,500 - out of another taxpayer's pockets - toward the price to buy myself a new car.

Why should I want to buy a new car? I like my El Camino. It's paid for and, in addition, monthly payments on a new car would probably cost more each year than the gasoline that I will use the rest of my life.

My son's 1978 Ford van, which recently turned 164,000 miles, just proved its worth as it hauled his stock trailer. We delivered two cows to Pollard Flats in just over two hours round trip. It pulled those hills like a champ. It's a work horse that gets fewer miles per gallon, but again, the added cost of a new truck would mean more debt than it's worth.

The Cash for Clunkers program seems like another boondoggle on the part of the President to use, misuse and abuse the power of his office in a vain attempt to bolster the economy by taking bread away from the taxpayers and spending America's wealth to please the cake eaters.

Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG (some very large pick-up trucks and cargo vans have different requirements)
