In a book released for sale Saturday, Dec. 12, Cottonwood author, teacher and parent Jamie Weil shares the story of her daughter, Amanda, who was diagnosed at age 12 with a bipolar disorder.

"Amanda and I feel the best way to bust stigma related to mental illness is to share our story," said Weil. "Bipolar disorder is a brain disease, not a character flaw, and early intervention is crucial."

The book, "Voices of Bipolar Disorder: Stories for Courage, Comfort and Strength," is available in bookstores throughout the country. It is published by LaChance Publishing and is the eighth in a series of books, The Healing Companion, that bring to light the real-life accounts of those living with chronic illness. Voices of Bipolar Disorder is intended to provide support and comfort for those living with the disease, as well as those who care for them.

The anthology contains more than 34 stories of parents, spouses, children and loved ones who have felt the impact of bipolar disorder. Included is the story of Jamie and Amanda Weil, a mother and 22-year-old daughter, who share their separate perspectives on how Amanda's struggle with bipolar disorder impacted their family.

These tales of courage, strength and compassion offer insight into the challenges of living day by day with the disorder as well as the terrible isolation experienced by its victims.

More importantly, the writers express hope for the future as well as demonstrate the strength of the human spirit.

The book series was created by Debra LaChance after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She sought out the personal stories of those who had been through what she was experiencing, and from whom she could take comfort, find strength to survive.

To date, the series has tackled some of the more pressing issues in health care including autism, breast cancer, alcoholism, Alzheimer's disease and multiple sclerosis.

The book is also available for purchase online at LaChance Publishing's Web site, www.lachancepublishing.com
