Even though the Audubon Society's annual Christmas bird count includes members of many nations, the South County will still play a part. The society's annual bird count is one of the world's longest-standing animal census for the third year in a row, said Ron Santry, a member of the local society chapter, Redding Wintu Audubon Society.
On Dec. 26 at 7 a.m., experts and amateurs alike can meet at the Anderson River Park K.C. Grove parking lot to take part in the census. Even the raw beginner has a place, Santry said, as they will be paired with experts in birding.
After meeting at the river park, birders will disperse to the eight, 15-mile radius zones to be observed in the South County area. Those zones include Anderson River Park, Lake California, Cottonwood Creek at Reading Island, Millville plains, Battle Creek, Jellys Ferry Road at the Sacramento River, and two zones that cover the City of Anderson.
Those interested in attending the bird count should bring warm clothing, as weather won't cancel the annual event, and possibly binoculars.
