The young Cubs girls varsity basketball team surprised a few people by holding their own early in the season. But Anderson can't seem to catch a break in league play. Their loss to the Yreka Miners on Friday (38-46) put them 0-4 in the league, while their overall record is 9-11.
In spite of the losing streak, Cubs coach Kevin Crye is looking at the losses as a series of bad breaks, rather than a team gone awry.
"We've been in every game," Crye said. "Of course I want to win, I'm as competitive as they come, but I'm proud of the girls how hard they're working, not quitting."
"I can't say I'm not disappointed. But I'm not disappointed in their effort," he said.
Crye said playing at home against the Miners, he thought his team had a good chance of winning.
The Anderson Cubs never allowed the Miners to run away with lead, but couldn't manage to pull ahead for long.
Coach Crye said for his young team, the losses are more menta. Before the latest losing streak, the Cubs girls hadn't lost more than two in a row.
"Instead of playing to win, we're kind of playing to stay close and hang on and maybe they'll win," Crye said.
Anderson's height disadvantage forced them rely on outside shooting against the Miners. But the girls had trouble getting a shot off.
"Early in the game they are they are taking shots and making them, but then they will take a shot and miss one," Crye said.
The girls seemed to be hesitant to take the shot in fear of missing it.
Crye said he's trying to convince the girls that it's OK to miss the shot, they just have to keep trying.
"Most kids are not going to make half their shots," he said. "But they have to keep taking them. And have that belief that the next one is going to fall."
