Despite economy, R.B. Bull Sale is a success

Sale results from the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale, held Jan 27-30, were recently released by sale organizers. In addition to breeding bulls, herd stock and geldings broken to the saddle and trained to work livestock, the sale also featured cattle dogs.

On Jan. 29, 17 working dogs were sold. The highest price paid was $10,000. The average price for dogs was $3,941.18.

Horses and riders put on a show of their own, Friday, Jan. 30. That night, a crowd of more than 4,000 packed the Pauline Davis Pavilion to view and purchase high quality trained and seasoned geldings. The highest selling horses went for $39,000; $25,000; and $17,000 to Shasta Valley Farm of Gazelle. The average for the gelding sale was $6,021.89 for a grand total of $572,050.00.

Along with the horses, four mules were sold with an average price of $2,560,. The highest selling mule brought in $3,500 with a grand total of $12,800 for the four animals.

While the sale was going on, cowboys and cowgirls were doing their best to show what their horses and mules could do in a small arena that was set up. Chasing imaginary cows to show what the horse was capable of doing, standing up on the saddle, walking underneath the horses and doing flips off of them.

On Saturday morning at the Bull Sale, the First Annual Andy Peek Memorial Scholarship was awarded to eight youth from Oregon and California totaling $7,500. Three of the recipients were North State students: Matt Lagario of Douglas City, Mariah Fischer of Cottonwood and Kayla Kraft of Redding.

There were 239 bulls sold with the highest selling for $7,000 to a ranch in Central Point, Ore. The overall average on the bulls was $2,637.66 with a grand total of $600,400 raised.

Local vendors participated in the week long festivities, some of which were Grandma's BBQ, 3A Bar Livestock and Shasta Farm and Equipment, all of Cottonwood.
