Torrential rains on Feb. 11 preceded a head-on collision north of the Deschutes intersection.

Christopher McCray, 29, Red Bluff, and Vicky Uchibori, 63, Red Bluff, were evacuated by ambulance with major injuries after a head-on traffic collision on Interstate 5 in Anderson following heavy rains at 1:10 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Both drivers suffered medium to major injuries, said California Highway Patrol officer Lee Cox.

McCray told investigators at the scene that his blue Honda Accord hydroplaned on the freeway bridge that crosses over Deschutes Road before he lost control and crossed the grassy median separating the traffic lanes.

His northbound vehicle entered the southbound lane to strike a Subaru driven by Uchibori, according to Anderson Fire Protection District volunteer Josh Coleman.

Both vehicles were occupied only by their respective drivers.

"It's a good thing no one was in the passenger seat," Anderson Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Andy Nichols said of the Subaru, "There's nothing left of it."

Anderson's firefighters had just returned from another traffic collision on I-5 that occurred at 12:30 p.m. A vehicle had spun around in front of a motor home pulling a trailer, according to Nichols, who said no injuries were reported in that collision.
