Logging sports impress at district fairgrounds

Humboldt State University's Logging Sports athletes were the overall winners during three days of competitions in the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference held at the Shasta District Fair grounds last week.

The logging sports competition is a blend of the past and future of logging. Events incorporate techniques used in the past, and require both skill and athleticism. Future loggers and foresters from regional colleges took part in the Logger Sports Exhibition.

Individual winners for the final day of competition on Saturday were:

Underhand Chop

Men: David Green from Central Oregon Community College, 44.47 seconds

Women: Melissa Chun from UC Berkeley, 2 minutes 22.85 seconds

Axe Throw

Men: Tied at 16, David Green and Nick Knipe from Humboldt State

Women: 14, Cascara Adkins from HSU

Double Buck

Men: Shane Larsen and Mike Follmar from Cal Poly, 19.41 seconds

Women: Jess Engle and Carrie Capara from HSU, 51.23 seconds

Choker Set

Men: Brant Brady from HSU, 11.61 seconds

Women: Carrie Capara from HSU, 16.1 seconds

Single Buck

Men: David Green, Central Oregon, 32.75 seconds

Women: Jess Engle, HSU, 1 minute 44.59 seconds

Jack & Jill

Madsion Thompson and Allison Chambers from UC Berkeley, 23.30 seconds

Stock Saw

Men: Marty, from the California Conservation Corps, 6.8 seconds

Women: Cascara Adkins, Humboldt State University, 7.75 seconds

Speed Axe Throw

Men: Max from Modesto JC, score of 24.

Women: Angie from UC Berkeley, score of 15.
