92-acre commercial development proposed at nixed auto mall site

Scoping meeting planned for Feb. 19 in Anderson City Hall

A 92-acre commercial development proposed for the northeast corner of the Interstate 5 and Knighton Road interchange is on the books at the planning division of Shasta County Resource Management. The proposed development would occupy much of the same area as the auto mall proposal rejected by county supervisors in 2007.

A scoping meeting is scheduled Feb. 19, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Anderson City Council Chambers, 1887 Howard St., to elicit public input toward the proposal's Environmental Impact Report.

Project applicant Hawkins Companies Commercial Developers of Boise, Idaho, have planned for the Knighton and Churn Creek Commons Retail Center Project "approximately 740,000 square feet of mixed commercial development which may include retail shops, restaurants, lodging, food supplies, recreation activities and equipment, traveler services and entertainment-related facilities to be phased in over three to four years," according to county documents.

At the meeting, the county seeks input on potential environmental impacts on the project, including traffic, water run-off concerns and effects on the aesthetics of the area.

"The merits of the project will not be discussed, and no comments regarding approval or denial of the project will be addressed at the meeting," stated the county notice for the scoping meeting.
