Cottonwood boy severely burned

A 12-year-old boy severely burned in Cottonwood Thursday afternoon is recovering today at a Sacramento hospital.

Seth Smith is in critical condition today at Shriners Hospital in Sacramento, said Anitra Folkes, an intensive care unit secretary.

Smith was initially flown from Mercy Medical Center in Redding to the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento before being transferred to the hospital.

Smith, along with several other boys, had been playing with the fuel can and using it to ignite scrap lumber on the 19200 block of Peacock Way in Cottonwood when the container exploded.

The container held diesel and possibly some gasoline, said Sgt. Jim Beaupre of the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. Smith has burns to 85 percent of his body.
