The Anderson Cubs varsity girls basketball team faced off against Shasta High School in the opening round of the West Valley Holiday Hoops tournament on Thursday.
The Cubs kept it close for the first half, but ran out of steam in the second half of the game, losing to Shasta 40-47.
The girls were able to shake off the loss, and beat their next two opponents.
On Friday, the Cubs took out Red Bluff with a 56-43 win. Then, they came back for the consolation final on Saturday with a hefty win against Orland, 59-47.
Megan Leitem scored 19 points and Carlyn Edwards added 13 for Anderson. The lady Cubs outscored Orland 19-10 in the fourth quarter.
But the game that put Anderson in the bottom half of the bracket on Thursday against Shasta looked similar to the Cubs previous bout with the team on Dec. 6.
The Cubs came out with a high intensity and weren't afraid to fight for the ball. The game stayed close in the first half, and the Cubs edged out the lead, 19-17. But when the Cubs came out in the third, the they struggled to make their shots, while Shasta ran down the court to make easy layups.
The Cubs weren't totally deflated. They started closing the gap in the fourth, but before they could seal the deal, Shasta jumped back to build up an 11 point lead with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Thursday match ended with Shasta up 47-40.
