Most of the Happy Valley firefighters agree that a three-story residential structure fire on Mack Place was the most challenging episode of 2008. Although the top floor was destroyed, firefighters were able to save much of the house. The damage, however was considerable.
At their annual Christmas Banquet and Awards Ceremony, Chief Joe Vasquez remembered 2008.
The department responded to a total of 576 calls last year. These incidents included structure fires, wildland fires, traffic collisions, medical emergencies and public assists. At least two thirds of the Happy Valley firefighters participated in strike teams nearby and as far away as Los Angeles.
Three members became fathers in 2008. Brice Roberts, Shawn Hauberg and Randy Simmons are the proud new papas. The Fire Department lost one of its finest Board Members with the passing of Claude Matheson.
The annual barbecue, auction and dance and the Christmas tree sale and breakfast were very successful. Hundreds turned out to enjoy the fund raising events and to help support the volunteers financially.
During the barbecue, another residence, this one on Shenendoah Lane, became engulfed in flames. Several Happy Valley engines, plus engines from five other departments descended on the fire. The house was saved, but with major damage.
Firefighter Troy Burns was named Fireman of the Year for the second consecutive year. Firefighter Andy Chambers was the top trainer. Both of these men were thanked and congratulated for their continual dedication to the Happy Valley Fire Department.
The Board of Directors treated Joe Vasquez to a new official chief's truck. His former truck became the new utility for the duty officers to use. The Board also approved the hiring of seasonal firefighters who manned the stations on weekends during fire season. In 2007 the program was paid for through a grant.
Speaking of grants, Captain Randy Simmons has spent much of his time researching and writing grants for the Department. His efforts have proven to be very successful. Over the past years the department has gained items ranging from engines to radios, turn-out gear to fire shelters, a water tender and much, much more. For this reason, Happy Valley has top-of-the-line equipment, tools and supplies with which to operate. That, along with excellent leadership, well-trained and dedicated officers and firefighters and a great sense of camaraderie, the Department has safely concluded another year.
In the words of Chief Vasquez, "That is the most important thing. We all came through safely." Here's to 2009. Happy New and Safe Year, Happy Valley.
