The Shasta County Office of Education (Project SHARE) is collaborating with local school districts and other agencies to get state grant funds for After School Programming in the South County area. If the proposal is approved, current afterschool programs in Anderson's Cascade Union School District will be expanded, and the Cottonwood and Pacheco School Districts will start receiving state funds.
"It is critical that our students continue to receive current funding as well as new financing to expand our programs," said Jodie VanOrnum of Project Share.
Project SHARE currently offers health, academic and recreational enrichment options for participating students. The program serves over 400 students on a daily basis in Cascade Union School District and Happy Valley Elementary Union School District.
"Students benefit from daily homework assistance and the opportunity to be in a safe, structured environment until 6 p.m." VanOrnum said. "Additional benefits include increased student connections to school site activities and academic succes."
The Shasta County Office of Education said parents have expressed thanks for after programs, because they have trust in the staff and have more family time because homework is done. Kids have said they clubs are fun, their grades have improved, and they enjoy playing games with their leaders, and having snacks, according VanOrnum said.
Project SHARE's mission is to secure funding and partnerships for the provision of a safe, structured and caring after school environment for every student in Shasta County, and is supported by the collaborative efforts of families, student, community members and local agencies.
