The Happy Valley 4-H beef club held our monthly meeting in the beautiful town of Ono in January at a member's house.
During our meeting, we shared information on how our steers are doing, how much they weigh and how the year was going. We also talked about what events we have been involved in, such as Wreathes Across America and the annual toy food drive and caroling.
We went over the things that are coming up for our club like tag day and demonstration day.
I did a demonstration for the club on the "beef basics." They are the things you need to have to take on a beef project. I brought along a poster and had all the items like brushes, combs, a show stick, buckets etc.
Then I did another demonstration activity on beef breeds. We got to guess which pictures of beef cattle went with the correct matching breed name. Some of them we had never seen before so their names were difficult pronounce, let alone guess how they look.
You can check out a "beef box" that has lots of items that help you teach the rest of your club all kinds of things to do with your project.
After some great tasting chili and cornbread that our host mother made for us, we finished up working in our record books and went outside to weigh one of our member's steers for the fair.
Then, we all worked together and showed her how to properly groom the steer since this is her first year in 4-H.
