Twenty-year-old Nathan Hevner of Cottonwood enlisted in the U.S. Army the day he turned 18. Seven months later, Hevner was assigned to take his basic training in Fort Jackson, S.C.
After completing basic training in September 2007, he was assigned to computers and networking.
He then took specialized training including jump school, bounty hunter school, Gryphon Group and technical school. Hevner's favorite was the beginning of Gryphon Group since he is an avid All Terrain Vehicle rider.
Hevner arrived in Iraq on Jan. 17. He is stationed in northeastern Iraq where he will be spending approximately six months working with a Special Forces Group helping to provide computer and technical support.
Hevner's Technical Support Group went over with the Special Forces Group and both units are scheduled to return at the same time. Hevner is currently ranked as an E4 with a six-year hitch.
Hevner is a 2007 graduate of West Valley High School in Cottonwood where he also attended both East and West Cottonwood Schools while growing up.
While in school and afterward, he also played, coached and refereed for the Anderson Soccer League for several years.
Hevner is the son of Joleene and Dale Hevner of Cottonwood. He is engaged to Jessica Williams of Anderson.
