Although the century-old house at 2896 Church Street may not be haunted as neighborhood children told its new owners, David and Dawn White did keep stumbling on pieces of the house's past while giving it a total overhaul.
Beyond keeping the house's original framing and trim around the windows, the White's have put a new face on the house, which was built in 1896, according to the Cottonwood couple.
Regarding the house's construction, David White said he was continually surprised by the extra care that went into its construction.
"All the extra steps taken back in the day lead to it still standing today," he said. "The 100 year old house is on brick foundations and tight as a drum. It's plumb."
Lost inside the walls over the years was a copy of The San Francisco Call newspaper from 1895. White also found an old dumbell, a hairbrush, a lady's hat from the 1920s, a horse shoe, and a wooden shoe. The artifacts must have fallen from the attic through the walls to the bottom floor, White said.
They also found lumber that had been taken from an old crate, which was stenciled, "Bromo Kola cures headaches."
After a while, the treasure hunting got in the way of real work, he said.
The two-story house features bay windows in the front room on the ground level as well on the second story in the bedroom. Although the house features new sheet rock, paint and appliances, Dawn White said she wanted to keep the original feel of the house.
"We tried to keep the character of the home as much as we could," Dawn White said.
The house had a root cellar, which David White said would make the next owner of the house a good wine cellar.
The house was first built by Everett Baker, who settled in Anderson in the 1880s, according to Anderson historian Jean Vonk. Baker built several houses in the Church and Howard Streets neighborhood of Anderson, she said, including a grocery in the area.

This house is so amazing. It really looks so nice. I remember going to a yard sale there awhile ago and it looked really run down. These people put a lot of care into the detail and it shows. It makes me miss my old house on the corner of Vernon & Ferry also an old Historic Bed and Breakfast that we lost to a fire years ago. I'm glad to see there is still a couple old ones in the neighborhood!
