Happy Valley Elementary School recently put on it's second annual basketball camp for kids in the community that are playing on school teams or just want to learn more about the sport. Caleb Byrnes and one of the many basketball coaches at Happy Valley helped to run the camp last year and this year was in charge of the camp. His main goal was to teach the kids drills that they can practice at home and still be able to help them on the court during school games.

The camp had 15 local youth participating in it. Twelve boys and three girls.

Burnes and his assistant Matt Roach, the physical education instructor at Happy Valley, worked on passing, shooting, left and right handed layups and competitive play with the kids. Each day ended with competitive play among the kids used skills learned in the drills.

Burnes designed the camp around individual growth and fundamental growth.

Shelby Weekly, Jacob Parkinson and Amy Westaby also helped with the camp, teaching the campers some of their own skills they learned.

Caleb Burnes has been teaching at Happy Valley Elementary school for the past two years. Before being hired on as a teacher, Burnes was a substitute teacher for the Happy Valley School District. He began playing basketball in fifth grade and has been playing ever since. Burne is hoping that all of the kids that participated in the basketball camp will try out for the teams in the fall. The camp ran for one and a half hours each day last week.
