Lone Tree school house burns down

What was known as the Lone Tree School house and later as the Heritage Baptist Church at 22235 Lone Tree Rd. burned completely at about 2:30 a.m. July 13.

The property, managed by the Western Shasta Resource Management District, was an estimated loss of about $250,000, Cottonwood Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Calvin Ciapponi said.

"By the time we responded it was fully involved," Ciapponi said. "It went up really fast."

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation by the fire district.

According to WSRMD, the Lone Tree School house has served residents in the Anderson area since it's opening in July 1887.

The last class to graduate from the school was in 1949.

The building and one-acre of land on Balls Ferry Road continued to be owned by the Cascade Union School District, but it was the Lone Tree Farm Center, a community group, took over maintenance and use of the building, holding fundraisers to keep it open.

In 1958, when the School District, the Farm Center and residents of the community approached the Western Shasta County Soil Conservation District about taking ownership.

The Farm Center committee continued the upkeep of the building until 2003, when Claris and Luda Myers' daughter, Peggy Kite, voluntarily took over the responsibility.
