Yes, it was a dry heat, unless you were standing under one of many Arizona misters.
Then it was a wet heat.
But the hundreds of people who came out to enjoy the Happy Valley Fire Department's 23rd annual Bar-b-Que, Auction and Dance didn't really care.
The crowd was sparse at first, but as the shadows replaced the sunlight, more and more celebrants ventured out to enjoy a fabulous tri-tip dinner, complemented by corn on the cob, beans, salad and bread.
The auction brought out the friendly competition as many unusual items created a bidding war.
Items ranging from an entertainment center to cigarette wrappers got the crowd involved. A hand-made quilt, an evening at a local bed and breakfast, two nights in a house at Trinidad competed with gunny sacks and hand-made aprons.
Then came the raffle with two guns and a camping package at stake. Door prizes ranging from barbecue tools to potted plants and dinners at popular restaurants were awarded.
At least 100 children bounced in the jumping castle, lined up for a water slide ride or looked for treasure.
Was it the largest crowd ever? No.
But what can you expect with the temperatures reaching 107 degrees. As the band played on, some danced, some sang along and some just listened.
Was it a great evening? Everyone had a great time, including the Happy Valley Volunteer Firefighters. At the end of the evening, with all their guests gone, the engines tucked back in their stalls and the grounds cleaned up, it was time to relax.
That is, until the water slide was re-inflated and everyone had the chance to cool off after an exhausting, though productive evening.
