"Graduation is not the end, but the beginning," Anderson Union High School principal Scott Booth told the graduating class of 2009 during their commencement ceremony on Friday, June 5.
As each graduate looked forward to the adventure that lies ahead, they could be also proud to be part of a school that has been rooted in tradition.
"This school is built on a very strong tradition of strong academic performance, athletic performance and top-notch activities," said principal Booth. "Two years ago we graduated a national merit scholar and that tradition continues today. This class has followed suit with high academics and achievements," he said.
Ninety percent of Anderson High School graduates are reporting that they are going to attend college or a vocational school after high school. Fifteen percent of them are going to attend a four-year institution straight out of high school, and eight students are going into a branch of the military.
Throughout their four years, the graduates attended classes while the scholar-athletes participated in section championships in soccer, tennis and football.
The school also has a reputation for its agricultural programs and performing arts. When you factor in innovative opportunities like the hiking and surf club, Booth said each AUHS student has the opportunity to grow and have fun in exciting ways.
Perhaps the most obvious tradition at Anderson Union High School is pride.
"The tradition I am most proud of is the support of parents and the families at home," Booth said.
Tim Azevedo said the history and tradition of AUHS has stood out him during his first year as the district's superintendent.
"You have a lot of multi-generational families who have gone to Anderson," he said.
"Education is not just the core curriculum. A part of education is teaching people a sense of community," Azevedo said.
"Parents want their kids to do well. They had a good experience and they want their kids to have a good experience," he said.
