Once the summer heat is on Redding Animal Regulation dispatchers based at Haven Humane Society typically receive numerous daily reports about pets left unattended in cars.
Capt. Lee Anne Smith, Redding Animal Regulation said "sometimes people just don't think - they may not realize it's inhumane and illegal to leave a pet unattended in a parked car when the outside temperature is 80 degrees or warmer"
Smith said it's an issue that animal regulation deals with every year and there is zero tolerance for violators of this strictly enforced law.
"The fines can add up," Smith said, adding "If we see a pet in distress that is life threatening, we'll think nothing of breaking the vehicle's window to rescue it."
She said when the summer temperature is expected to exceed 80 degrees; animals should be left at home when pet owners are on shopping trips that take them away from the vehicle for periods of time.
"Leaving your pet in a parked car when the temperature exceeds 100 degrees compares to setting your oven to 350 degrees and jumping in," Smith said. "If you must take your pet to town with you, at least have a person with you who can take the animal to a shady area while you shop, otherwise leave the pet at home."
