Even with a thundershower on Saturday, usually the Shasta District Fair's biggest day for attendance, the 2009 edition of the 27th Agricultural District's exposition was an outstanding "Red, White and Blue aFair!"
Chris Workman and her minions of mostly volunteers attracted at least 82,679 customers to the admission gates. I qualify that statement only because Workman had not yet had time Monday morning when I spoke with her to audit the raw gate counts nor verify the total number of free and discounted passes in various categories.
Whatever the final count, the attendance is a solid 5 percent above last year, which is a major achievement given the state of the local economy and the record number of Shasta County residents who are out of work.
"I'm happy with the numbers. We couldn't ask for more in this economy," Workman said, noting the attendance figures would no doubt have been much higher if not for Saturday's thunderstorm that hit shortly after 6 p.m. when hundreds of people were streaming through the gates.
The deluge sent large crowds into the exhibit halls, which was great for the venders doing business there, but hundreds more headed for their cars, local restaurants and home as the carnival rides and outdoor entertainment venues shut down for about 20 minutes, Workman said.
