Free lunches for youth under 18 years of age are available weekdays at the Anderson River Park and Happy Valley Community Center from June 22 to July 31, according to Denise Ohm, nutrition supervisor for Shasta County Office of Education. The free summer lunch program, called Summer Seamless Feeding Option, continues the free or reduced school lunch program offered by the USDA and administered by the Shasta County Office of Education, Ohm said.
"If children need this food during school, they still need it in the summer," Ohm said. "It's a wonderful benefit for working families who need help."
The brown bag lunches usually consist of a sandwich, fruit and milk. Lunches at the Anderson River Park, 2800 Rupert Rd., are scheduled 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Lunches at the Happy Valley Community Center, 5400 Happy Valley Rd., are scheduled 12 p.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The free lunch program is awarded to populated, needy areas, Ohm said. Seventy-eight percent of students enrolled in the Cascade School District qualify for free or reduced school lunches, according to Debby Andrew, Director of Nutrition at Cascade School District.
At Happy Valley Primary School, 74 percent of students qualify, Ohm said.
Families qualify for free school lunches based on income and family size, Andrew said. For example, a family of three with at most a $1,900 gross monthly income would qualify for free lunches. A family of three with between $1,901 and $2,700 gross monthly income would qualify for reduced-cost lunch.
No summer lunch program would be held in Cottonwood.
