Eighty letters from the Anderson Fire Protection District were sent out to district residents to notify them of the fire hazard created by allowing grasses and weeds to grow long and dry out on their property. As of Monday June 22, district fire marshal Howard Fincher said he would begin making his rounds ensuring that the notified residents have complied with district weed abatement policy.
Many residents in the district were ahead of the curve this year, creating fire breaks before the district asked them.
"As you drive around town, a lot has been done already," Fincher said. "Because of the events of last year's fire in the area, people recognize they need adequate protection around their houses."
Cal Fire guidelines require 100 feet of defensible space around residential structures.
"A defensible space perimeter around buildings and structures provide firefighters a working environment that allows them to protect buildings and structures from encroaching wildfires as well as minimizing the chance that a structure fire will escape to the surrounding wildland," according to the Cal Fire Web site at www.fire.ca.gov.
