Can you spell better than a fifth-grader?
Odds are, if you attended the Cascade Elementary District spelling bee on Tuesday, you'd be stumped by some of the words they pulled off.
Outstanding spellers from Anderson Heights, Meadow Lane and Verde Vale Elementary Schools took part in their second annual district-wide spelling bee on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
"These are some of our best and sharpest fifth-graders, at least in the area of spelling," Meadow Lane principal Brad Clagg said at the event.
Twenty-seven fifth-grade students took part in the spelling bee - the top nine spellers from each of the schools. A fourth-grade spelling bee was also held simultaneously.
Hillary Jones, a Meadow Lane teacher, gave the rules and spelling words to the students.
"You are all very intelligent and courageous so feel good about yourselves," she said. "There are only a couple of winners, so just be proud that you are here and you had the courage to do this."
The students were asked to write out the word before they spelled it aloud.
Those students who spelled their word correctly would continue on to the next round, until there were only a few left.
They spelled words like counterfeit, dichotomy, and mausoleum.
After multiple ties, Jessica Muzzo of Meadow Lane and Sarah Leonhardt of Anderson Heights were declared co-champions of the spelling bee. Issy O'Bar of Meadow Lane took third place.
Fourth grade winners were Santiago Hernandez of Meadow Lane in first; Monica Keo of Meadow Lane took second; and Ozzie Ford of Anderson Heights got third in the fourth grade competition.
The top winners received a medal, and every participant took home a ribbon.
Robyn Leonhardt is the mother of fifth-grade spelling bee co-champion Sarah Leonhardt.
"Sarah is our little overachiever. It's very hard to take a book away from here. We call her our little bookworm," said Robyn Leonhardt, Sarah's mother.
Mrs. Leonhardt said the spelling bee was exciting.
