A public hearing drew no testimony Feb. 17 on whether the City of Anderson should seek an eighth round of Community Development Block Grant funding from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
A second public hearing will be held April 21.
As early as March, the state will begin assessing grant requests from up to 180 jurisdictions for grants as high as $800,000, explained Susanne Lewis, the city's part-time grants and redevelopment manager. To be eligible, the projects must do at least one of the following:
Benefit low and moderate income families
Aid in the prevention of slums and blight
Meet other community's urgent development needs.
In all cases, at least 51 percent of the beneficiaries must be from families earning less than 80 percent of median income.
According to the 2000 census, 59 percent of Anderson residents meet this requirement, Lewis said.
If received, the grant funds would allow housing loans and grants to rehabilitate existing housing, acquire rental housing or assist with new construction; improve or construct water and sewer facilities, flood control and drainage; and acquire or construct homeless shelters, day care centers, senior centers or fire protection facilities, she said.
Anderson previously received Community Development Block Grant Funding in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005, her background report states.
