Anderson High School’s Tyler Davis went to Bakersfield with the intention of bringing back a medal from the State Wrestling Championships.
Davis felt he had worked hard enough and was prepared for the challenge, and his coaches believed the same.
But with less than 30 seconds remaining in the third period of his fourth match, he saw his dream slip away. Richard Segovia of Silver Creek High School in San Jose, the Central Coast Section Champion, scored a two-point reversal and went on to win the match 2-1. The loss was Davis' second of the tournament by that same score.
After a 2-1 loss to the North Coast Section runner-up in his first match, Davis went on to pin Ian Newcomb of Skyline and Matt Candeleria of Willows, before his final loss to Segovia.
Also going 2-2 in their first trip the State meet were Marcus Zachary and Colt Little. Zachary lost his first match to Brad Johnson of Canyon Springs (Southern Section) 6-3. He went on to defeat Tod Graff of Steele Canyon, San Diego, 2-0 and Isac Lazarovitis of El Camino Real, Los Angeles, 6-4. Zachary was eliminated in his fourth match by seventh place, Nick Waldhauser of Oak Ridge 7-0.
Little lost his first match to Derek Hawkins of Santiego (Southern Section) 11-5. Then, in a repeat of the North Section finals the week before, he reversed the decision on Jesse Cole of Chico with a 9-6 win. Little also defeated Adolph Medina of San Fernando, 3-2, before ending his State bid with a pin by Garrett Jones of Woodcreek in Roseville.
The Anderson wrestling team will end their season with an awards banquet next Wednesday, March 18th in the AUHS cafeteria. The accomplishments of these state qualifiers and others will be honored starting at 7 p.m.
