Shasta County's Probation Department recently received notice from the California Corrections Standards Authority that a construction grant of $14 million has been awarded Shasta County to replace its aging juvenile detention facility.
Shasta County's Board of Supervisors authorized Brian J. Richart, chief probation officer, to apply for the grant using $3.9 million in county matching funds and in-kind contributions.
"This is a big win for Shasta County. I'm very pleased with the county board's decision to make this investment in our kids," Richart said.
Shasta County's proposal ranked second behind Tuolumne County, a jurisdiction with no juvenile hall. It also outranked proposals from Humboldt, Yolo and Colusa counties, Richart stated Tuesday in a news release.
"This investment by the state in local juvenile justice will pay significant returns in the lives of troubled yout and their families in Shasta County," Richart said.
"Shasta County currently runs an aging detention facility with little to no room for quality evidence-based programming. These funds will help us change that circumstance for kids for 30 years to come," he continued.
The next step is for the state Corrections Standards Authority to accept the recommendations of the executive steering committee that evaluated the proposals and then officially notify each recipient county.
