The Copadouro coffee shop at 2959 E. Center St. in Anderson did not last a year before owner Raymond Randle closed the business two months ago, initially due to electrical problems and subsequent plans to refurbish the coffee shop with a kitchen to serve food.
"I can't physically operate the bar and the coffee shop and the other things I'm doing," Randle said. "But I'm still selling bulk coffee over the bar. It's difficult to find someone to run [the coffee shop] like it should be, and the economy is not helping."
An interested party who planned to operate a barbecue restaurant in the building on the opposite corner, a former bookstore, also backed out, Randle said.
Now closed indefinitely, Randle said he would entertain restaurant ideas to improve the coffee shop. He added that he would also consider leasing the business.
"We had a great customer base of those who came to Copadouro," Randle said, "Everyone was very friendly and open."
The 49 Club, Randle's other business venture in historic brick building, is still open and has revitalized itself with a line-up of live jazz acts without a cover charge. The club has scheduled acts for Fridays and Saturdays throughout March, beginning March 7.
