Driver dies in Cottonwood traffic collision

John J. Turskey, 30, of Cottonwood, died after he was thrown from the Nissan pick-up truck he was driving south on Main Street in Cottonwood, north of Lake California Drive at 6:42 p.m., Thursday March 12 according to a CHP document.

Turskey was driving at an excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle, and hit a raised curb which overturned the vehicle. Turskey, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected, suffered major head trauma and died.

The vehicle struck two trees and a wooden utility pole before coming to a rest.

Passenger Cindy Shelton, 44, of Cottonwood, who wore a seatbelt, was extricated from the vehicle and flown by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center for treatment of major injuries. She was listed in fair condition Friday morning.

Alcohol is a suspected factor in the accident.
