Spring can increase the threat of mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile Virus - and the economy may add to the threat this year.
A study last year showed that a downturn in California's housing market resulted in an increased number of neglected swimming pools, which may have resulted in more cases of West Nile virus, stated Rachel Torbert.
In 2008, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed 440 human and 32 equine cases of West Nile virus in California. In Shasta County, one human case was confirmed, Torbert noted.
While there is no human vaccine for West Nile, horse owners in California can take advantage of equine West Nile Virus vaccines. For more information on equine West Nile virus, call (402) 434-5307.
