WV track hosts Enterprise

The West Valley track season got off on the right foot last Tuesday when the Eagles hosted Enterprise for the first meet of the season.

Both first-year and veteran athletes got their chance to run, hurdle, long jump, high jump, discus throw, shot put and more against a skilled Enterprise team.

"The Enterpise boys are one of the best in the section. So it's good, stiff competition even though it's an early season meet," said Steve Main, one of West Valley's track coaches.

Tuesday's track meet gave the Eagle's athletes a chance to get back in the groove and start setting the standard for the rest of the season.

"The goal is to get our new kids in their events for the first time to see what they can do, and to let them understand a little bit about the nature of the competition," said Main.

"For our veterans it's more to test their legs," he said. "Obviously, they are not quite in track shape yet, but they like to get an early season time or distance and see how they are doing."

This year, West Valley has a lot of first-time track athletes, from freshman to first-year sophomores and juniors, Main said.

Even though there are a lot of beginners, the team did well.

"We had some really nice, impressive marks," Main said. "We got see some of the younger kids do some really great things. So we were very pleasantly surprised."

The more experienced athletes made and impressive showing as well.

"The veterans got some very solid, impressive early season marks without a lot of conditioning," the track coach said. "It was a good day for us."
