Haven Humane Society to open pet camp for kids

Haven Humane Society is once again taking registrations for its 2009 Camp Love-A-Pet sessions.

Camp Love-A-Pet is open to children between the ages of 10-15 who will have the opportunity to learn much about caring for and training shelter dogs.

They will also learn the importance of giving humane treatment to all living creatures through the two-week sessions.

The first session is set for June 13-28 and the second session is Aug. 1-17. Graduation days will be June 28 and Aug. 17, where each camper will show off his or her dog and receive recognition from government dignitaries for their accomplishment in community service.

Space is limited, so to ensure a place in this dynamic program, please send the registration form with $250 tuition fee by May 15 to Camp Love-A-Pet in care of Haven Humane Society, P.O. Box 992202, Redding, CA 96099-2202. Applications are available online at www.havenhumane.org

"Campers will spend from 8 a.m. to noon learning about shelter pets as well as other animals," said Capt. LeeAnne Smith, Redding Animal Regulation and coordinator for the program.

"The high point of the sessions is the time they spend training shelter dogs in basic obedience under the watchful eye of our professional staff dog trainers."

She also said children will have the opportunity to observe spay and neuter surgeries at Haven Humane Society Spay and Neuter Clinic next to the shelter.

The camp will be also be visited by others in the animal industry, including those who care for wildlife and exotic species including birds, camels and alpacas.

Many other activities are planned for the camp sessions.
