New Tech thespians to produce Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale'

Anderson New Technology High School drama students decided they wanted to do something 'big' for their production this year.

"We decided, 'Let's tackle Shakespeare,'" said New Tech drama teacher Steve Main.

On April 9-11 they will bring that endeavor to life through their performance of Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale.'

"This is way beyond anything I've done," said Main, who has been teaching drama for 15 years.

In spite of all of the work involved in putting the production on, the teacher said his students have what it takes to pull it off.

"We have the most talented high school drama kids I've ever taught," Main explained.

The New Tech drama class chose 'The Winter's Tale' because it is not well known, and because it contains a variety of dramatic elements.

"It has romance, comedy and tragedy. It's got a little bit of everything," Main said. "So my actors who love comedy have found their way into some humorous roles, and those who want to do more serious work have really had the opportunity to stretch themselves that way."

"It's been a good piece for us," he said.

The play provides a first-time acting experience for freshman Tiffany Adams. Adams said she enjoyed growing close to the actors and actresses while learning the play.

The drama student said she also appreciates how Main has helped her be open to the crowd, and not be shy. "I like how he taught us to not be afraid to be in front of people," she said.

Anderson New Technology High School will present William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 9-11, at West Valley High School in Cottonwood.
