Anderson's downtown to get $817K facelift

Although other government entities in Shasta County are reeling from unprecedented budget cuts, Anderson's City Council, acting on behalf of the city's redevelopment agency, calmly and quietly awarded a bid last week for almost $817,000 to complete landscaping of three demonstration blocks along East Center Street in the heart of downtown.

Site Work Solutions, Inc., of Redding was the apparent low bidder at $816,691.85. Five other bids were received, including one for more than $1.1 million submitted by J.F. Shea Co., Inc., also of Redding, according to Dana Shigley, assistant city manager.

In plans prepared by OMNI-Means, Ltd., (see illustration below) improvements will include plantings of at least 17 ginko biloba or maidenhair trees, 20 crape myrtles or flowering plums, and a long series of low hedge comprised of dwarf escallonia and dwarf Indian Hawthorn. Along an ornamental 3-foot high metal railed fence, daylilies, dwarf spirae, groundcover rose and star Jasmine flowers will bloom throughout the growing season.

Knee-high light bollards interspersed with ornamental street lights will line the sidewalk separating the streetscape from the railroad tracks that parallel East Center Street and Highway 273.

Funds to pay for the project were made available from the Anderson Redevelopment Agency's 2008 tax increment bond sale, worth $3.6 million.

The total cost, including contingency, is $1.131 million.

Great! That part of town needs and deserves the update. Hopefully it will help draw more customers to the businesses as well.
