During the early hours of Friday, May 8, Happy Valley Firefighters were awakened as pagers all over Shasta County sounded the alarm. Within a few hours, five local fire agencies had joined forces to form a strike team "3150 Charlie" and immediately began the long drive to battle wildland blazes in southern California.
Happy Valley Fire Captain Tyler Bassham and firefighters Brice Roberts and Ed Ciapponi were teamed up with units from Shasta Lake City, Old Shasta, Anderson and Redding.
Redding Battalion Chief Jon Bauer is the strike team's leader.
The strike team, consisting of five wildland engines, left the Redding area around 7 a.m. and would stage before receiving an assignment in the Santa Barbara area. As of press time, it was not yet known how long the strike team would remain on assignment in southern California.
