Project SHARE is an after-school program serving 21 schools throughout Shasta County, including six schools in the South County area.
"We provide a balanced program between academics and educational enrichment activities," said Jodie VanOrnum, project director.
"The programs have time set aside to assist students with homework, class work, and if they need assistance with reading, or practice with math."
On Thursday, May 13, Project SHARE organizers will hold an event to advise local parents and community members about what is happening within the program, as well as information about how local students are benefiting from their experiences.
Although most Project SHARE sites in the South County have waiting lists, Anderson Middle School and Happy Valley Elementary School still have spots available for new students, VanOrnum said.
The number of spots available is based on the number of students for which Project SHARE receives funding, VanOrnum stated.
The after-school program starts immediately after students are dismissed from school and lasts until 6 p.m.
The program not only entertains and educates students, but can also be a big help to working parents, according to VanOrnum.
"It's huge. My own daughter attends the program and she loves it. They are having a great time and are engaged in activities," she said.
Sustainability Event
The sustainability event will be held Thursday, May 14, at the Gaia Hotel in Anderson.
It will showcase student activities and programs.
The program will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There is a $10 donation at the door, and participants will be welcome to afternoon treats, beverages and program information.
Project SHARE organizers will also accept voluntary contributions from parents and community members to help expand their after-school programs, including an increase in their music and fine arts offerings.
