Spot fire extinguished near Happy Valley Elementary

A small spot fire near Happy Valley Elementary School, 17480 Palm Ave., was reported to the Happy Valley Fire Protection District at about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday morning. The prompt spotting afforded the district an opportunity to respond quickly. The fire burned to the northern property line of the school, said District Captain Randy Simmons, adding that the property line was "a couple hundred yards from the school."

"The fire was out long before recess," school secretary Wendy Bogges said. "At first we were going to hold the kids from going outside because of the smoke, but because of the wind the smoke cleared."

Simmons initially reported that the cause of the fire was a smoldering, illegal-burn pile. Cal Fire is investigating the cause of the fire, but could not be reached for comment.
