As many as 20 farmers and craft vendors are expected to sell their wares at the opening of the Anderson farmers market on June 4, market manager Myron Kreger said. While strawberries, blueberries, onions, fennel and cucumbers are among the expected produce on the first day, the market will be open every Thursday, 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. through the month of October at the Shasta District Fair grounds parking lot at the corner of Hwy. 273 and Briggs Rd.
The certified farmers market permits area growers to sell their produce at a food-safe location in Anderson. Each grower is certified to sell specific produce by Shasta County Agriculture Department and is a member of the Shasta Growers.
"You always get fresh at the farmers market. You go to supermarket - the strawberries are picked green," farmer Rex Klein of Anderson said. "Strawberries always taste so much better at the peak of maturity. You want to pick the day before, no earlier. The problem is supermarkets can't ship it like that - that's why supermarket produce is picked green,"
"I planted a lot of pickling cucumbers this year, and I'll have a good crop of beets," 7th year farmer Bob Kearns said.
Kearns got into farming the very year he retired as a Ford mechanic in the Bay Area. He did so specifically to sell at area markets.
"It's a lot of work, but it's something I really enjoy," Kearns said.
The Anderson farmers market would not be open on June 18, due to the 2009 Shasta District Fair.
