On Thursday May 21, Shasta Public Health, Anderson Police Department and Anderson Fire Protection District put on a DUI simulation at Anderson Union High School with the help of the ASB Leadership Class.
They brought fatal goggles which simulate the effects of alcohol. Students can put them on and try activities, such as driving a remote control car through an obstacle course, walking a straight line and toss kick balls into a trash can.
The DUI simulation organizers brought a car that was involved in a DUI crash in Washington. The story behind it was a very sad one. "A boyfriend and girlfriend went to the boyfriend's home. He had an older sister who had friends over and were drinking, the under-aged couple started drinking with them. When they ran out of alcohol they decided they were going to go get some more and left and went to the store. The driver took a corner too fast and flipped the car into a ditch. In the car there was the couple and the older sister. One of the girls was thrown from the vehicle and died on impact. The driver only suffered minor injuries. The boy suffered from a broken leg, a broken nose and also other minor injuries."
The Anderson Fire Department also did a simulation on how they extract people from vehicles they can't get into.
