Teens urged to drive safely this summer

As summer approaches, many teens will be spending increased time behind the wheel of family vehicles.

The Injury Prevention Coalition of Shasta County would like to remind all teens and parents to become familiar with safe teen driving practices.

On May 20 and May 21, the Injury Prevention Coalition teamed up with the Anderson Police Department to hold Teen Traffic Safety events at Anderson New Technology High School and Anderson Union High School.

Traffic Safety Professionals provided education regarding common risk factors facing teen drivers and provided tips on how to stay safe.

Parents were invited to discuss teen driving safety at an after school event at Anderson New Technology High School. Students participated in activities designed to create awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence, viewed a car actually involved in a fatal alcohol-related crash; and received information regarding California's Graduated Driver's Licensing (GDL) law.

Teens are more likely to die in a traffic crash than from any other cause. They are also more likely than any other age group to be involved in a fatal traffic crash. In fact, teens are twice as likely as adult drivers to be in a fatal crash.

Sixteen-year-old drivers have crash rates that are about three times greater than 17-year-old drivers, five times greater than 18-year-old drivers.
