Levi Flores, 17, a senior at North Valley High School in Anderson, will be honored Friday with a Youth Achievement Award given by Shasta County Citizens Against Racism (SCCAR).
Flores,a member of the Choctaw Tribe, worked this past summer with Anderson Parks and Recreation to help share Native American culture and dance with the community. This was his seventh year working for the city.
Flores has also worked as a volunteer for the Native Club and continues to work with young people, sharing his native culture. He participated in Share Our Heritage and Culture days at Anderson and West Valley High Schools. He has also helped other student learn how to dance and understand Pow-Wow protocol.
Flores is planning on attending college after completing high school. He enjoys long boarding and snow boarding and has participated in football and wrestling while in high school. Flores is also part of the Native Thunder Group of the Anderson Union High School District.
The SCCAR award ceremony — the group’s 20th annual fund-raiser and awards dinner — will be held Friday, Nov. 6, at the Cattlemen’s Restaurant, 2184 Hilltop Dr., Redding. Dinner reservations of $45 include SCCAR’s annual membership fee and cover the cost of receiving the organization’s quarterly newsletters. For reservations, call Penny Harris at (530) 243-0962.
Others to be honored include Civil Rights and Social Justice Award winners Lee Macey and Don Yost, who have been instrumental in celebrating diversity at the Multi-Cultural Fair held in the City of Shasta Lake each year, as well as Law Enforcement Award recipient Cpl. Bill Forrest, who currently serves as a member of the Shasta County Multicultural Advisory Board.
Very active in volunteering, taking a stand for victims and promoting equal treatment of all, Forrest is being honored for his true passion for community spirit, social justice and equality.Sarah Gallagher, recipient of SCCAR’s 2009 Isaac Lowe Scholarship, will also be honored, as will long-time board member Fran Brady for her many years of dedicated service to the mission of SCCAR and for her work in the community.
A no-host cocktail hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with musical entertainment provided by Sylvia Hill, a jazz pianist who is also director of the newly-formed Redding Children’s Choir that meets weekly at the Martin Luther King Center.Dinner, the awards ceremony and additional fund-raising activities will start at 6:15 p.m. Following dinner will be a silent auction of donated gifts as well as chances to win other items.
