Several firefighters will head out to a stretch of wilderness this weekend to continue a tradition spanning 93 years for the Anderson Fire Protection District. They will cut down a tree, this year a white fir, to serve as the Christmas tree in the City of Anderson.
Anderson Fire Chief Andy Nichols invited all members of the public to attend the tree cutting, Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. Hot drinks and chili will be served by the Anderson Kiwanis Club.
The appointed tree is located off Highway 44, between Shingletown and Viola, and white signs with green lettering will point the way for motorists, Nichols said.
To get to the tree from Hwy. 44, turn left on 300 Road, go 1.5 miles and turn right on 318 Road and drive for one mile.
Nichols commended the businesses volunteering time and resources to retrieve the tree.
Donated by Sierra Pacific Industries, the tree will be lifted and carried by Dura-Crane and put on a truck from Franklin Logging. It will be trucked to downtown Anderson to its new home in Anderson Square, where Systems Plus will unload the tree. To help decorate the tree, I-5 Rental donated the use of a lift.
Fire district volunteers will decorate the tree in time for the Lighting Ceremony on the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, 6 p.m., when Christmas carols will be sung by Girl Scouts, and gifts will be passed out by Santa Claus.
