The associated student body at Anderson New Technology High School is more frontier than traditional.
The two leadership classes at New Tech have their own focus, but also work with each other. The first period class handles more of the traditional aspects of an ASB and also helps with projects in the community.
The fourth period ASB focuses more on the projects within the community, and lends a hand in projects around the school.
The ASB at New Tech is broken into non-traditional roles.
Instead of having a president, vice president and treasurer, the high school elects five executive board members to lead projects in the school and around the community.
The class votes on each of these positions at the start of each semester.
The activities director is in-charge of events going on around the high school and keeping track of student activities with the school secretary and faculty members.
The community connections coordinator develops relationships with individuals and organizations within the community through the marquee, press releases to the media, and the school newsletter and paper.
The cultural commissioner promotes harmony within the school by working with the activities director, link crew and video production class.
The staff relations coordinator attends the staff meetings to report ASB activities and issues; they also seek input from the faculty about school concerns and promote communication between staff and students.
The executive officer oversees the leadership class meetings and assists the other officers with their duties; they also hold the only position capable of signing financial reports, recording minutes and providing the agenda.
"Both classes focus on helping the community. If there is a project in first period that a fourth period student would like to participate in, they can and visa versa," said Cathy Alderman, the fourth period leadership teacher at New Tech. "We review requests from the community and make sure our kids can handle it and then we sit down to figure out which class the project will suit or see which class has the time to devote to it," said Steve Main, the first period leadership class teacher. The overall goal of the leadership class is to help the community.
