Haven Humane Society encourages pet owners to be especially aware of their pets' needs as fall brings weather changes that can affect animals as well as people.

Dr. Ray John, Haven's chief executive officer, suggests a few guiding tips that can help make pets safer and more comfortable when the weather changes.

Cats and dogs need protection from wet and cold, a safe haven inside the family home or their own dog house. Cats, small dogs and especially short-haired pets are better off indoors when the thermometer drops this time of year, he said.

"Pet owners need to be aware that the outdoor dog needs a dry, elevated dog house with clean, dry bedding and a flap over the opening to keep drafts out," he said.

"Some pet owners install pet doors to allow their pets access to the garage where a soft cushion in the warmest corner will keep them comfortable on those cooler days and nights," John added.

Pets also may need an increase in food amounts during the colder months as calories help boost body heat. On the other hand, indoor dogs and cats may get less exercise that could mean they won't need as many calories, thus avoiding weight gain.

"These cooler nights might cause cats to crawl up under the family car seeking shelter and warmth of the engine," John said. "It may get caught in the fan and (be) seriously injured when the engine starts. It's a good idea to open the hood of your car or slap it noisily with your hand before starting the engine on cold days to startle any animal sleeping there."

"Haven's friendly, knowledgeable staff welcomes the opportunity to assist pet owners who have questions regarding their companion pet's health care and maintenance throughout the year," John said. "We are here to help, so call 241-1653 if you need information."
